In the quest for net-zero, governments and other organisations are increasingly looking to diversify our renewable energy options. Electric vehicles are an obvious choice, with mature technology, however the market for using hydrogen as a fuel source is starting to evolve. Unlike electric vehicles, hydrogen may be pumped into a car the same way as petrol – only taking a few minutes rather than hours for a full charge. Also, hydrogen vehicles only emit water, no harmful toxic or greenhouse gases like conventional cars. The technology for hydrogen cars has been around for a long time, however it is only now beginning to be harnessed and invested in. My job is to test fuel cells, ensuring they hit the correct performance as would be required by a vehicle or other device.

My Typical Day:
Wake up at 6am and have muesli and coffee. Head to the gym and get into work for 8am. Firstly, I check my emails and plan my day in the lab. I then process the data from experiments that have been running overnight, ensuring everything looks ok. I then head down to the lab to set up some more tests. Then I have lunch in the staff canteen and spend my afternoon in the lab. Normally I leave around 4pm.
